Improve Your Health Through Holistic Services

By Michael Obrien

While practitioners of traditional medicines only focus on the affected parts of the patient's body, the holistic services aim to promote overall wellness. When you see a doctor for complaints of discomfort, the medical professional will do tests and analysis to know where the problem is. That is what he will be working on. Meanwhile, holistic health views the problem as a whole. According to its principle, maximum health may only be attained when the body, mind and soul function optimally.

It suggests that the mental, spiritual, emotional and physical health must be maintained to keep one healthy. Each must remain in synchrony with the others. Even the environment is believed to affect the person's well-being. If one of these aspects have not reached its potential, the others are also affected. This can lead to sickness.

The concept of holistic health has been around for centuries. Early philosophers, such as Socrates and Hippocrates, highlighted the correlation of a person's health to the things around him. The ancient Chinese and Indian medicines also follow similar principles. They do not only deal with the pain that the patient feels. They also identify the other factors that could contribute to such condition.

Traditional medicines promise to eliminate the sickness. However, holistic health aims to completely get rid of the problem. Aside from dealing with the disease and its feeling of discomfort, it also identifies the underlying causes to prevent them from recurring. Preventive measures are taken to maintain the optimal condition of the body.

Hence, holistic approach is not just about taking medicines, visiting clinics or undergoing treatments. It is a way of living. The expansive treatment covers the kinds of food that one takes in and the lifestyle he lives. By eradicating the causative factors of diseases, one can live his life free of illnesses.

Only nutritious foods must be introduced to the body to keep it physically healthy. Any activities that could stress the body must be avoided. This includes engaging in unprotected sexual intercourse, smoking cigarettes and consuming too much alcohol. Poor self-esteem, negative mindset, high level of stress, excessive intake of sugar or caffeine and anything that could wane down the body are also discouraged.

The mental condition of the patient has to be monitored, too. According to studies, the patient's physical health is interrelated with his mental state. One can influence the other in a two-way method. The mind affects the body as the body affects the mind. Therefore, good mental health is imperative for a healthy body.

The patient must also be emotionally healthy. Loneliness can weaken the body. This is the reason that people with terminal diseases need to be constantly positive. When they give in to negative emotions, their body no longer functions effectively. The saying, laughter is the best medicine, is medically-founded after all.

Finally, living an active lifestyle is encouraged. You need adequate exercise to keep your body in normal function. Luckily, there are several wellness centers that are now offering an array of holistic services. You can choose from massage therapy, aromatherapy, meditation and yoga among others. There are alternative medicines, such as acupressure, acupuncture, reflexology and naturopathic as well.
