Herbs And Natural Supplements Should Be Used With Caution

By Cathy Mercer

Living in a day and age wherein awareness about health and medicines is quite high, more and more people are turning to natural foods and drinks to stay healthy. This is the reason herbs and natural supplements are so popular among those conscious of their health.

It is not only in modern times that the beneficial values of botanical products have come into knowledge of men and women. These have been used since the ancient eras in medicinal cures and treatments. Over the centuries, they have become more commercial in nature, leading to a high market value that has been created for these products. In many parts of the world, people are switching to healthier as well as more natural forms of food and medicine, as compared to pharmaceutical drugs.

What people often to not know to distinguish between is dietary from the medical products. While the former are not conventional medicines, the latter represent pharmaceutical drugs that are only to b prescribed by a professional of the medical fraternity.

This does not go to say that dietary supplements should be taken without prior consultation. In fact, a professional must be consulted before procuring any such product.

The flip side of using herbal or natural remedies without prior professional consultation is, as discussed above, misdiagnosis. This could even, in worst case scenarios, lead to irreparable damage to some or the other body parts. The chances of such dire consequences may not be very high, but exist nevertheless.

However, once you begin taking these supplements, the advantages could not be counted. They are healthy and help the body stay fit. Since they have ingrained medicinal qualities, they help the body heal and repair itself faster, when injured. The list continues.

Again, while the benefits are galore, these supplements should never replace conventional medication. The latter is tested and approved by the clinical trials they undergo. They are sold only if they pass through several rigorous procedures ad examinations. Their herbal counterparts do not pass through any such processes. Moreover, they are not certified by any such authority as to pose a claim to being medically sound.

Even if you have been prescribed a product by a professional, do remember to check a few things when you eventually buy the product. The name of the manufacturing company, the expiry date of the product, a comprehensive list of the ingredients used, the dosage and quantity mentioned on the label are some of them. If the company has a website, make sure to log on and check its background and credentials in case you have not heard of it before.

The remedial effects of herbs and natural supplements are recognized worldwide. However, it is not prudent to blindly start using any such products. It is better to consult a doctor and then start any consumption. Self medication can often lead to more harmful rather than advantageous results.
